Assassin bugs—sometimes called kissing bugs—are insects that can occasionally bite humans. While they are not aggressive and most bites do not cause serious harm, it’s important to respond properly if you believe you’ve been bitten. Staying calm and taking the right steps early can help reduce discomfort and lower the risk of complications.
The first thing to do after a suspected bite is to gently clean the area with soap and clean water. This helps remove bacteria and reduces the chance of infection. Avoid scratching the bite, even if it feels itchy or irritated, as broken skin can slow healing and increase infection risk. Applying a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes can help ease swelling, redness, and pain. If itching persists, an over-the-counter anti-itch cream or oral antihistamine may provide relief.
In the days following the bite, pay close attention to both the bite site and how your body feels overall. Many people experience only mild symptoms such as localized redness, swelling, or tenderness that gradually improves. However, it’s important to watch for signs that may suggest a stronger reaction. These can include increasing swelling, persistent pain, fever, fatigue, body aches, or swelling around the eyes. While serious illness related to these insects is uncommon, early symptoms can be subtle, making awareness especially important.
