Colon cancer ,  also known as  colorectal cancer , is one of the most common types of cancer in adults. Understanding  where and how it originates  is key to early detection and increasing the chances of successful treatment.

What is the colon?

The  colon  is part of the  large intestine , whose main function is to absorb water and form feces.

Parts of the colon:

  • Ascending colon
  • Transverse colon
  • Descending colon
  • Sigmoid colon
  • Straight

Cancer can develop in  any of these areas , although it is most common in the  sigmoid colon and rectum .

Where does colon cancer begin?

In most cases, colon cancer  begins as a polyp , a small benign lesion that grows on the inner wall of the colon.

Common process:

  1. A benign polyp appears 
  2. Over time, some polyps become  precancerous.
  3. If they are not detected, they can turn into  cancer.

This process can take  10 to 15 years , which allows for a great opportunity for prevention.
