How to Eliminate Black Marks in Sandals

Introduction

Summer sandals are stylish and comfortable, but they often develop black marks from sweat and dirt, especially under the toes. Keeping your sandals clean not only makes them look fresh but also extends their lifespan. This guide covers step-by-step cleaning methods for suede, leather, plastic, and cork sandals using simple household materials.

Materials Needed

  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Mild soap
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Sandpaper
  • Tea tree oil

Directions

  1. General Cleaning: Tap sandals together to remove loose dirt, then gently scrub with a soft-bristle brush. Wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth.
  2. For Suede Sandals: Use fine sandpaper to lightly rub the black marks. Brush afterward to restore texture.
  3. For Leather Sandals:
    • Check if the leather is treated by dropping water on it. If it beads, it’s treated.
    • Treated Leather: Mix mild soap with water and gently wipe. For tough stains, use equal parts water and vinegar.
    • Untreated Leather: Sprinkle baking soda on black marks, leave overnight, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

  4. For Plastic Sandals: Place sandals in a mesh laundry bag and machine wash on a gentle cycle. For stubborn stains, rub tea tree oil on the affected area.
  5. For Cork Sandals: Mix warm water with cork-safe soap, gently scrub using a soft brush, rinse with cold water, and allow to air dry completely.
