How to Save Orchids with Rotten Roots Using Reverse Water Culture
Orchids are elegant but delicate plants, and one of their biggest challenges is root rot. If your orchid has lost all its roots but still has healthy leaves, don’t throw it away. You can bring it back to life using a method called reverse water culture. This process stimulates root growth directly from the leaves and stem, helping your orchid recover and thrive again.
Step 1: Assess the Orchid’s Condition
Remove the orchid from its pot and check the roots. If they are mushy, hollow, or brown, they are rotten and cannot support the plant. Only firm, green, or white roots should remain. If none are left, don’t worry—this method works even for rootless orchids.
Step 2: Remove Rotten Roots
Use clean, sterilized scissors or pruning shears to trim away all dead and decayed roots. Cut until you reach firm tissue. Removing old, woody roots also helps prevent bacteria and mold growth.
Step 3: Disinfect the Plant
Sprinkle the cut areas with a natural antifungal agent such as cinnamon powder or turmeric powder. This step helps protect against fungal infections and encourages clean healing.
