Oh, this reminds me of a conversation I had just last week at the grocery store! I was standing in line behind a lovely young woman who was carefully balancing her purse on the edge of the cart seat, and I mentioned, “Dear, have you ever noticed that little hook on the front of the cart?” She looked at me with such surprise and said, “That’s a HOOK? I thought it was just part of the handle!”
At 73, I’ve pushed quite a few shopping carts in my day, and I’ll tell you—that little hook is one of the most underused features in the grocery store!
What That Hook Is REALLY For
That small plastic or metal hook (usually found on the front edge or side of the shopping cart) is officially called a purse hook or bag hook, and it serves several important purposes:
1. Keep Your Bag Off the Dirty Floor
This is the main purpose! That hook is designed to hold your purse, handbag, or tote bag at a convenient height so it doesn’t have to:
- Sit on the germ-covered grocery store floor
- Take up precious space in your cart
- Get buried under your groceries
2. Prevent Theft and Keep Items Close
When your purse is hanging on the hook at the front of the cart, it’s:
- Right in your line of sight
- Harder for someone to snatch
- Easy for you to access if you need your wallet or phone
3. Free Up Cart Space
Every inch counts when you’re doing a big shop! By hanging your bag on the hook, you free up:
- The child seat area (which many people use for bulky items)
- The main basket space for actual groceries
- Your hands for shopping
Why Don’t More People Use It?
Great question! I think there are a few reasons:
❌ Lack of Awareness – Many people simply don’t know it’s there or what it’s for!
❌ Concern About Weight – Some worry their bag is too heavy and will tip the cart. (Most hooks can handle a standard purse just fine!)
❌ Habit – We’re used to putting bags on the floor or in the cart seat.
